Sustainability Policy

At The Pear Tree, we believe unforgettable weddings should leave lasting memories — not a lasting impact on the planet. We are dedicated to creating sustainable celebrations by partnering with our team, trusted suppliers, and couples to make environmentally responsible choices at every stage.

Our Purpose

We create unforgettable wedding experiences while preserving natural beauty, supporting local communities, and reducing our environmental impact. We’re on a journey to embed sustainability into how we operate, grow, and innovate.

Shared Responsibility

Sustainability is everyone’s responsibility. Every team member at The Pear Tree plays a part in helping us achieve our goals, from everyday decisions to big-picture planning. We encourage everyone to contribute ideas, challenge norms, and help drive positive change. Our journey is collaborative, and your voice matters.

Our Commitments

We’ve identified nine core priorities to guide our sustainability journey:

1. Sustainable Travel

We support low-carbon travel options for staff, suppliers, and guests.

•  EV chargers have been installed
•  Cycle-to-work scheme in place

Future: Adopt the Artemis Sustainable Travel Policy at The Pear Tree and actively encourage staff to travel more sustainably through car-sharing and public transport initiatives.

2. Recycling & Waste Management

•  We’re cutting down on waste by reusing more and sending less to landfill
•  Implement battery & lightbulb recycling boxes
•  Paper recycling bin at reception
•  Water Butts to be in place to gather rain water and use for plants

Future: Establish a recycling baseline and set a 25% improvement target, transition to rechargeable and fully recycled batteries across the venue, regularly review monthly and annual waste reports to drive continuous year-on-year improvement, reduce waste collections during quieter months (January, February, March, and December), and implement onsite composting for garden and food waste, diverting up to 75% onsite and reducing external collection to 25%.

3. Paperless by Design

We’re cutting out unnecessary paper use and switching to digital tools.

•  Printed brochures phased out
•  Hand dryers installed to reduce paper towel waste
•  Digital systems used for onboarding, recruitment, and document sharing

Future: Use of iPads on event days to minimise paper use.

4. Energy Conservation

To reduce energy consumption, and move to renewable energy suppliers.

•  Change key storage areas to motion sensor lighting
•  Keep areas on the venue shut down when not in use. Lights off, heating etc.

Future: Carry out a full LED bulb audit, introduce clear visual reminders (e.g. green stickers) on non-sensor lighting in back-of-house areas to ensure they are switched off when not in use, conduct annual energy audits supported by smart energy checklists, and transition to a more sustainable energy supplier.

5. Community & Ethical Business

We support local suppliers, charities, and community initiatives.

•  Host a community lunch at Christmas
•  Offer venue spaces to community groups and build long-term partnerships
•  Regular litter picking at the site and in the community

Future: To have more of a presence in the community supporting the local area and local charities.

6. Responsible Supply Chain

We’re building partnerships with suppliers who share our values.

•  Developed a Sustainable Procurement Policy that assess supplier environmental credentials

Future: Review and strengthen purchasing processes across all departments (Chefs, Housekeeping, Bar, Maintenance, and Events), encouraging more considered ordering and consolidation of deliveries to reduce external packaging and site deliveries by up to 50%, while applying the procurement policy wherever possible to drive sustainable practices within operational constraints. Build partnerships with wedding suppliers who share sustainable values.

7. Reusing to Reduce Waste

We focus on reuse before recycling, wherever possible.

•  Digital documents in use to reduce print waste

Future: Create an internal reuse hub for office items and materials.

8. Sustainable Food Practices

Our food offering reflects care for people and the planet.

•  Menus feature seasonal, locally sourced ingredients where possible
•  Printed menus use recycled paper

Future: Promote an increased range of plant-based menu options and introduce carbon footprint measurement for all menus to support more sustainable food choices, alongside developing the vineyard with the aim of producing our own grape juice and wine by the end of 2027.

9. Empowering Our People

Our team is central to our sustainability efforts.

•  The GM has completed Carbon Literacy Training

Future: All team to go through Carbon Literacy Training by the end of 2026.

Our Values

•  Transparency – We’re honest about our progress and our goals
•  Stewardship – We protect the places where we work
•  Equity – We prioritise inclusion, fairness, and local impact
•  Collaboration – We work together across teams and with partners
•  Innovation – We welcome new ideas and technologies
•  Responsibility – We own our impact
•  Integrity – We act with purpose and honesty

Looking Ahead

We understand that becoming truly sustainable is a journey. While we aren’t carbon-neutral yet, we are laying the groundwork for measurable improvements and long-term positive change.

Our Sustainability Policy is reviewed annually to ensure it reflects best practices. For any questions regarding this policy, please contact Liam Wilson , General Manager The Pear Tree Purton, [email protected]
